HIV’s Patient
Zero exonerated

Due to a serious misunderstanding by journalists and the public, one individual and his family were vilified for years. Now, thanks to new research, the record can finally be set straight regarding the spread of HIV in the United States.

UA evolutionary biologist Michael Worobey debunked the widely believed and decades-old theory of the start of AIDS through “Patient Zero.” Worobey provided evidence that a single individual, labeled “Patient Zero,” was not responsible for the acceleration of the AIDS epidemic in the United States by contracting the disease in Haiti or Africa and infecting multiple partners in the United States later in the decade. Worobey’s findings were published in the pre-eminent journal Nature.
