Man has long depended on infrastructure to mitigate the damage caused by extreme weather. But with extreme weather events occurring more frequently, researchers must rethink the way we build our communities to dampen the risks of extreme heat or flooding like that associated with Hurricane Katrina. Several research projects focused on sustainability and resilience were awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) funding this year. ASU received $12 million to lead the multi-institutional Urban Resilience to Extreme Weather-Related Events Sustainability Network. The NSF also awarded ASU $18.5 million to create a second Engineering Research Center, the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics.
