With historic and current contributions of the cattle industry to Arizona’s economy, communities have a vested interest in managing and eradicating diseases that plague ranchers and cost billions of dollars each year.
Dave Wagner of NAU received a $490,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to study Babesia, the organism carried by ticks that is responsible for cattle fever. Efforts to eradicate cattle fever have saved the industry the equivalent of more than $3 billion annually.
