Student-Led Compost Cats Recognized by EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the UA for its outstanding efforts in food recovery led by the student organization Compost Cats. Earlier in the year the organization signed a three-year intergovernmental agreement with the city of Tucson to collaborate on collecting organic waste from local businesses for composting.

The student-led organization originally formed by collecting organic waste — food waste, landscape debris and manure — in the Tucson community. Now in its fifth year, it has since diverted more than 10 million pounds of organic waste from landfills and continues to expand its reach in the community.
