The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Dr. Feryal Özel, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Arizona, a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship. With Guggenheim Fellowships only awarded to 178 scholars, scientists and artists in total, Dr Özel was the only Astrophysicist awarded in 2016, and one of only 15 natural scientists to receive the honor.
A pioneer in her field, Özel has made significant contributions to the physics of neutron stars and black holes, as well as to the co-evolution of black holes and galaxies in the early universe.
